A man and a woman were shot to death Thursday afternoon in the tallest apartment building in downtown San Diego.

San Diego Police received a call at 3:11 p.m. reporting a shooting with two people injured inside an apartment at Spire San Diego, a 45-story building at 1475 Island Avenue in the East Village.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene at 3:31 p.m. 

Detectives learned that the man who reported the shooting was a resident of the apartment. He left the scene, but was stopped by officers at the intersection of Interstates 805 and 15 and detained for questioning.

Police said the man’s 5-year-old daughter was with him and has been taken into protective custody.

The victims were identified as a 28-year-old Filipino woman who lived in the apartment and a possibly Filipino man whose relationship to others in the apartment is not yet known.

Police said detectives are collecting evidence and attempting to locate witnesses.
