Authorities Monday identified a 57-year-old woman killed in a collision caused by a street-racing suspect driving on the wrong side of the road in a South Bay neighborhood.
Martha Villalobos Romo of San Diego was driving her grandchildren through Chula Vista and was traversing the intersection of L Street and Third Avenue when the other motorist ran a red light at the road crossing about 6 p.m. Saturday, according to county Medical Examiner’s Office.
Villalobos Romo died at the scene of the accident. Paramedics took her grandchildren, ages 7 and 10, to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The driver of the Mustang, Alonso Pina, 22, was arrested.
“Pina is currently hospitalized for (apparently) non-life-threatening injuries and, upon release, will be booked into county jail for vehicular manslaughter,” CVPD Lt. Dan Peak said.
The driver of the second car involved in the alleged illegal street race — believed to be a white Subaru WRX — fled following the collision and remains unidentified and at large, the lieutenant said.
