Fire officials on Sunday credited an observant neighbor with saving a family home when a fire ignited from a still-smoldering grill.

The blaze, in the 3800 block of Via Romaya in National City, apparently began because the grill, never was properly extinguished. The residents used it Saturday evening.

Officials received reports of the incident at about 12:25 p.m., according to OnScene.TV.

The origin of the fire was described as an outdoor bar with a built-in grill.

The residents were not at home, but a neighbor spotted the fire as it spread from the bar. It reached the patio, the house, a fence and a tree.

He jumped a fence and used a garden hose to fight the fire until firefighters from the National City and Chula Vista departments arrived and took over.

No one was injured. The damage is estimated to be around $10,000.
