A 42-year-old man was arrested Friday morning on suspicion of pulling out a knife and throwing a rock at a 7-Eleven clerk in the East Village area of downtown San Diego before grabbing the cash register and fleeing, police said.

It happened around 4:30 a.m. at the convenience store near the intersection of Ninth Avenue and J Street, San Diego police Officer Tony Martinez said.

The man walked into the store, pulled out a knife and demanded money from the cash register, but the clerk hid behind the counter and refused to comply with the suspect’s orders, Martinez said.

The thief had two large rocks in his jacket pockets and threw them at the clerk before reaching over the counter, ripping out the cash register and leaving the store on foot, the officer said.

A witness called police and gave a suspect description, then officers found him standing across the street from the store and arrested the man, later identified as Khrisstyves Dulay, Martinez said.
