A brush fire broke out in Escondido’s Kit Carson Park Friday, sending up smoke that was visible from Interstate 15, and blackening about two acres.

The flames were reported just before noon in a riverbed at the park at 3333 Bear Valley Parkway. By around 2 p.m., crews had stopped the progress of the blaze and declared it 80 percent contained.

No injuries or property damage were reported.

Firefighters planned to remain on scene for at least several hours to extinguish the flames and guard against flare-ups.

San Pasqual High and LR Green elementary schools were briefly placed on lockdown to keep students inside during the firefight.

The North County Transit District also rerouted its BREEZE route 350 to the Westfield North County mall. A temporary bus stop was set up at Bear Valley and Beethoven.
