One person suffered major trauma Sunday afternoon and four others were injured when a minivan crashed into a Nissan sedan in National City.

The incident left two men and a woman trapped inside the sedan, along with a child, aged 4. Rescuers had to remove the sedan’s roof to free the victims.

Officials from the San Diego and National City fire departments, along with the California Highway Patrol, responded to the scene.

A witness told OnSceneTV that the male driver of the minivan drove recklessly as he entered the freeway from the Main Street onramp.

The witness said the driver swerved, sped up, stopped, then crossed lanes of traffic before hitting the sedan.

Paramedics transported all the individuals, including the minivan driver, to UC San Diego Medical Center. The child received minor injuries.

Southbound traffic backed up following the 4:28 p.m. crash. The CHP will investigate.
