A teenager from Chula Vista was jailed Friday for allegedly stabbing a man to death during a predawn fight in the South Bay city.

Dashawn Ignacio Mitchell, 19, was booked into San Diego Central Jail early Friday morning on suspicion of murdering 28-year-old Jose Orozco of Chula Vista early Wednesday in a neighborhood near the mouth of the Sweetwater River, according to police.

Patrol officers responding to reports of a disturbance in the 500 block of Flower Street shortly after 1:30 a.m. found Orozco mortally wounded from a stab wound to his upper body, Lt. Chris Kelley said. Medics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Witnesses told investigators the fatal assault occurred during a “violent confrontation” between the two men, Kelley said.

The reason for the dispute was unclear.

Mitchell is being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
