A man was jailed Monday after allegedly turning on a fire hose and flooding all eight floors of a Little Italy apartment complex.

Water began gushing through the building in the 1800 block of State Street shortly before 12:30 a.m., according to San Diego Police.

Officers evacuated the residents, and San Diego Gas & Electric personnel were called in to shut off power to the apartments as crews worked to get the flooding under control.

A building inspector was called to the scene to evaluate the damage.

The man suspected of turning on the fire hose, 37-year-old Francisco Morales, was arrested a short distance from the soaked building, Sgt. Thomas Sullivan said. It was unclear what might have motivated the act.

Morales was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of felony vandalism. He was being held on $20,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
