Police Tuesday were searching for a man suspected of stabbing another man in the back after a fight in Ocean Beach.

The series of events began shortly before 6:50 p.m. Monday in the 4900 block of Newport Avenue, San Diego Police Officer John Buttle said.

The man who was stabbed was arguing with his girlfriend when another man intervened and slapped him, Buttle said. The victim then punched the suspect, knocking him to the ground.

The suspect got up and ran away, but returned a short time later and stabbed the victim in the back as he ran past him, Buttle said.

The victim, a man believed to be in his 20s, was taken to a hospital for treatment of a wound that was not believed to be life-threatening, Buttle said.

The suspect, a man believed to be in his 30s, was last seen running northbound on Newport Avenue. A detailed description of the suspect was not immediately available.
