An Amtrak passenger train struck and killed a pedestrian Thursday on a stretch of bayside tracks in Little Italy.
The woman was walking between the rails near West Hawthorn Street when the southbound Amtrak train approached at about 40 mph shortly before noon, according to San Diego Sheriff’s officials.
“The engineer activated emergency braking but was unable to stop before the train collided with the (pedestrian),” Deputy Marcus Levine said.
Medics took the unidentified woman to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Traffic lanes in the immediate area were closed due to the incident, according to San Diego police.
