A 26-year-old man was in custody Monday for allegedly stealing items from a Pacific Beach convenience store, then returning a short time later and threatening a clerk with a metal pole, police said.
Clifton Brownwell was booked into the county jail on suspicion of felony second-degree robbery and resisting or obstructing arrest, with bail set at $50,000, according to jail records.
Brownwell allegedly entered the 7-Eleven in the 4500 block of Mission Bay Drive about 7:50 p.m. Sunday, stole several small items and left the store, prompting an employee to summon police, according to San Diego Police Officer John Buttle. The suspect returned a short time later, apparently angered that the clerk called for help, Buttle said.
Brownwell then tried to take cigarettes from a display and “raised a metal pole to strike the victim,” Buttle alleged. The uninjured clerk backed away, and Brownwell allegedly stole some chips as he left the store the second time and was quickly apprehended by officers, Buttle said.
