A fire of unknown origin damaged a duplex near the San Dieguito Academy Friday, leaving four people in need of interim shelter pending repairs.
Flames began spreading through one of the two attached residences in the 1000 block of Evergreen Drive in Encinitas about 1 p.m., city Fire Marshal Anita Pupping said. Engine and truck crews were able to confine the blaze to that unit, though the other sustained smoke damage, according to Pupping.
It took the personnel about 15 minutes to get the flames under control, she said.
The American Red Cross was called in to help arrange for temporary lodging for the displaced residents — a retirement-age man who lives in the fire-damaged unit, and a couple and child who reside in the other.
The cause of the blaze, which also damaged a van and a truck parked in front of the duplex, was under investigation, Pupping said.
