The San Diego Police Department is warning drivers to be prepared for a DUI checkpoint somewhere in the city on Friday night.

The DUI/driver’s license checkpoint will take place from 11 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday at a location chosen because of previous drunk-driving accidents or arrests.

The department regularly announces the checkpoints in advance because of the deterrent effect on drivers who might drink or take drugs.

Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and checking for proper licensing while only delaying motorists momentarily.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
