A driver ignored orders from a traffic officer near the “Rock ‘N Roll Marathon” course Sunday, smashing through a road barricade and driving on the course.

Police chased the suspect to Oceanside where he crashed, got out of his car and ran away. The driver was arrested shortly after. San Diego Police said no spectators or runners were injured during the incident, which began at 8:05 a.m. at the Sea World Drive interchange on Interstate 5, according to Sgt. Tom Sullivan.

The initial crash was at 8:05 a.m. at the Sea World Drive interchange on Interstate 5. The car was chased 40 miles up the I-5, at speeds up to 80 miles per hour. CHP officers said spike strips were laid on the freeway but the driver drove around them.

At Oceanside Boulevard, 40 miles north of the start of the chase, the driver was involved in some sort of crash, and the chased car rolled over at the exit. The CHP officers at the scene said the driver ran up a hillside, but was arrested.

Some 30,000 runners were set to take place in the marathon Sunday, and extra security had been planned because of the terrorist attacks in England.
