An alleged drunken driver accused of seriously injuring a bicyclist in University City pleaded not guilty Monday to DUI and hit-and-run charges.

An Aug. 17 preliminary hearing was set for Heejoon Lee, 29, who is free on $100,000 bail.

San Diego police said a 44-year-old man was riding north in the 6500 block of La Jolla Colony Drive about 6:30 a.m. on May 11 when a 2008 Honda Accord driven by Lee hit him from behind.

Lee continued driving for a short distance before losing control of his car, which veered off the street and crashed to a halt in some shrubbery, said SDPD Officer Tony Martinez. Lee was arrested and was booked into jail.

Medics took the bicyclist to a hospital for treatment of fractures to his ribs, pelvis and spine, Martinez said.

Judge Jay Bloom ordered Lee not to drive with any alcohol in his system during the case.
