San Diego police sought Tuesday a man who opened fire on a woman, but missed after some type of gang challenge on a street in the Encanto neighborhood.

The suspect had a rifle when he approached the woman and a male companion on Akins Avenue near 65th Street shortly after 9:30 p.m. Monday, which prompted both to run for cover, San Diego Police Officer Dino Delimitros said.

The woman got into a car and started to pull away when the suspect began shooting. She wasn’t injured, but her car was struck by gunfire, Delimitros said.

The suspect got into a waiting gold Nissan Altima with three people inside and drove away, according to the officer. Police described the gunman as Hispanic, in his 20s, 5 feet 10 and 230 pounds.
