Rain storms kept California Highway Patrol officers busy in San Diego County this weekend, causing a significant increase in traffic collisions compared to so-called “good-weather” days, according to statistics released Sunday.
There were 208 crashes recorded by the CHP during the 24-hour period on Saturday, according to Officer Tommy Doerr.
The CHP jurisdiction includes all highways in the county and surface streets in the unincorporated areas. Sunday’s crash count reached 236 at 4 p.m., according to Doerr.
There usually is an average of about 140 crashes in the CHP jurisdiction on a typical Saturday or Sunday when the weather is good, Doerr said.
The busiest times for crashes were Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, with the 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. period on Saturday recording 49 crashes and another 49 recorded during the 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. period on Sunday.
