A wrong-way driver killed in a fiery crash on Interstate 5 in Pacific Beach was identified Tuesday as a 21-year-old San Diego man.

Preet Sheth was driving a midsize sedan south in the northbound freeway lanes. He stopped the car near the Grand/Garnet Avenue exit and shut off the lights just before it was struck head-on by an oncoming car around 10:15 p.m. Friday, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office and the California Highway Patrol.

Sheth’s car caught fire with him still inside and had become fully engulfed in flames by the time CHP officers and fire department personnel arrived, authorities said.

Sheth’s body was found in the drivers seat after the fire was extinguished. A Medical Examiner’s Office report said he died at the scene from multiple blunt force and thermal injuries.

The woman behind the wheel of the second vehicle suffered major injuries in the crash and was taken to a hospital, according to news reports.
