A 21-year-old man was drunk when he crashed his 1998 Toyota 4-Runner into another car in San Marcos, seriously injuring a woman, deputies said Sunday.

The crash was at 8:42 a.m. Saturday on Twin Oaks Valley Road, near South Village Drive, according to sheriff’s Deputy Yvan Rogers. As he was headed down the road, the man lost control of his vehicle, crossed over the center median into oncoming northbound traffic and collided with a 2007 Honda Accord driven by a 58-year-old woman, Rogers said.

The momentum of the 4-Runner caused it to catapult across two traffic lanes, land on its roof in the bicycle lane, hit an electrical box and come to rest on the sidewalk, according to Rogers. The driver of the Honda was transported to Palomar Medical Center with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The alleged drunken driver was also taken to the same hospital and was treated for minor injuries.

Alcohol was believed to be a factor in the collision, Rogers said.
