Two brothers from Chicago who came to San Diego to commit a series of armed robberies, allegedly with a third brother, were sentenced Thursday to nearly 17 years and 15 years in prison, respectively.
Willie Myers, 24, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of robbery and was sentenced to 16 years and eight months behind bars.
His younger brother, 21-year-old Korey Myers, pleaded guilty to the same charges plus two “hot prowl” burglaries while people were home. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Deputy District Attorney Jalyn Wang said the brothers committed seven armed robberies last October and November, passing a gun between them. Nobody was physically injured.
A third brother from San Diego, 30-year-old Charles Myers, is awaiting trial in September on robbery charges.
“This crime was horrendous,” Wang told Judge David Danielsen, referring to the series of holdups.
Speaking of the victims, Wang said, “They’ve all been traumatized.”
Before he was sentenced, Willie Myers apologized for what he had done.
“I’m not no monster,” he said. “I’ve been in and out of jail my whole life. Please have mercy on me.”
Danielsen called the case “sad,” especially for the victims, who had a gun pointed at them and were robbed.
The judge noted Willie and Korey Myers “never had a chance,” growing up in difficult times in Chicago.
A friend and mentor to Korey Myers said the defendant managed to graduate from high school with honors, but fell back into a life of crime when he got back around his brothers.
“His actions affected a lot of people,” Wang said. “His decisions do have consequences.”
