Authorities reached out to the public Thursday for help in identifying a young man who wounded a teenager so badly during a fight an East County neighborhood that the victim is not expected to survive.

The assailant stabbed 17-year-old Jeffrey Quirino during an altercation in the 8900 block of Delrose Avenue in Spring Valley about 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to sheriff’s officials.

A passing motorist spotted the gravely injured boy and took him to a hospital, Lt. Kenneth Nelson said. The victim remained in critical condition this afternoon with a poor prognosis for survival.

Investigators have no detailed description of the assailant, who appeared to be in his early 20s. The reason for the fight remains unclear.
