A jaywalking woman suffered a possible concussion Thursday when a motorcycle hit her as she was crossing a South Bay road with her 3- year-old daughter in her arms, authorities said.
The child apparently escaped harm when the two-wheeler knocked her mother to the pavement in the 1000 block of East 18th Street in National City about 7:30 a.m., according to the National City Police Department.
The motorcyclist told officers he was heading east when the woman crossed directly into his path, Lt. Alex Hernandez said. The rider reacted by swerving to the right, but the pedestrian saw him coming and simultaneously ran in the same direction, prompting him to lay his 2015 SYM motorcycle onto the roadway in an attempt to avoid a collision.
The sliding bike swept the mother’s feet out from under her, but she seemingly managed to keep her child from being struck by it or hitting the ground, Hernandez said.
The woman was not fully responsive to officers’ questions following the accident, leading them to suspect that she had sustained a blow to the head, Hernandez said.
Ambulance personnel took her to UCSD Medical Center and took her daughter to Rady Children’s Hospital for a precautionary checkup.
The motorcyclist suffered some scrapes during his fall but required no medical care, the lieutenant said.
The woman, who was on her way to a daycare center to drop off her child at the time of the accident, was not in a crosswalk as the motorcycle approached, according to police.
