A man who fatally stabbed his wife’s best friend, who was living with the couple in their Spring Valley home, was sentenced Tuesday to 16 years and four months in state prison.

Michael Dean Mifflin, 59, previously pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and mayhem in the death of 62-year-old Mary Watson, said Deputy District Attorney Derek Grilz.

Sheriff’s deputies responding to a report of a death at a home in the 500 block of Parkbrook Street found Mifflin inside the residence, suffering from self-inflicted cuts to his wrists, about 6:45 p.m. last Aug. 12.

Watson’s body was located in a different room, bearing signs of “traumatic injuries,” said sheriff’s Lt. Glenn Giannantonio.

A motive for the killing was not disclosed.
