San Diego Sheriff‘s deputies and officers from other local law enforcement agencies began a crackdown on drunk driving Thursday in connection with opening of thoroughbred racing at the Del Mar Racetrack.
Seven teams of deputies and other officers conducted 47 traffic stops and arrested seven people on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. An eighth person was charged with driving under the influence of drugs.
Officers from San Diego, La Mesa and National City joined sheriff’s deputies in the “zero tolerance” saturation patrols.
Motorists who see a drunk driver were encouraged to call 9-1-1.
Funding for the crackdown was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
