Two people were killed and two other people were injured in a head-on crash at the western end of Interstate 8 Sunday in Ocean Beach.
A man driving a 2009 Volkswagen sedan reportedly entered the westbound lane of the freeway heading east and collided about 1 a.m. with a 2004 Honda Accord near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver of the Honda, a 37 year-old man, died at the scene and the occupants, two females, ages 30 and 34, suffered moderate injuries, CHP and San Diego Fire-Rescue officials said.
The sole driver of the Volkswagen and the Honda’s two passengers were taken to UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest.
The driver of the Volkswagen later died at the hospital from his injuries, the CHP said.
The crash was just east of the traffic signal where the freeway ends, where large “do not enter — wrong way” signs are intended to prevent turns from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard into oncoming freeway traffic.
