A gang member accused of firing into a group of rivals in Logan Heights, fatally shooting a man as he ran away, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder and other charges.
Antoine Heratio Brown, 27, was ordered held on $1 million bail. He was already in jail on unrelated charges when he was re-arrested Friday and charged in the March 10 killing of Jason Coney.
Deputy District Attorney Robert Eacret said Brown was a passenger in a car traveling through rival gang territory when he allegedly fired into a crowd.
The prosecutor said the 28-year-old victim was shot as he ran from the scene. Eacret alleged that Brown hid behind a car and tried to shoot Coney again before fleeing.
Coney was taken to UCSD Medical Center following the 9:10 p.m. shooting, where he died of gunshot wounds to the abdomen.
Witnesses reported hearing people arguing just before the shooting outside a home in the 2200 block of Ocean View Boulevard, police said.
A status conference was set for April 14 and a preliminary hearing for April 20.
