A fire of unknown origin caused an estimated $55,000 worth of damage at a three-unit garage building in Golden Hill Wednesday and left two people who had been staying in one of the spaces in need of emergency lodging.
The non-injury blaze in the 3000 block of Broadway erupted about 9:45 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
It took crews about 15 minutes to douse the flames, SDFRD Capt. Joe Amador said. The American Red Cross was called in to help the displaced man and woman arrange for housing.
The blaze caused about $50,000 in damage to the stand-alone structure and destroyed roughly $5,000 worth of contents, according to Amador. Most of the losses involved the heavily cluttered center unit, where the flames began spreading. The adjoining garages sustained smoke, heat and water damage.
Investigators were unable to determine what sparked the fire, the cause of which was likely to go down in the books as undetermined, the captain said.
