The owner of a BMW was hospitalized with minor injuries, the result of being dragged by his vehicle after it was carjacked in the North Park neighborhood, police said Thursday.

The carjacking occurred near the intersection of Ray Street and University Avenue around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, said San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims.

Heims said the vehicle’s owner had left it parked near an ATM while he made a withdrawal. As he did so, the 29-year-old suspect climbed into the driver’s seat, telling the female passenger to get out because he was taking it, Heims said.

As the carjacker began to drive away, the owner tried to enter the driver’s side of the vehicle and was dragged a short distance before he let go, Heims said.

The vehicle then struck an object, causing the airbags to deploy and prompting the suspect to flee; he was soon caught, Heims said, adding that the vehicle owner was hospitalized with injuries to his feet and arm.
