A 20-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his mother, then stabbing and seriously wounding his teenage brother, must stand trial on murder and attempted murder charges, a judge ruled Thursday.

Mohammed Raad Agab allegedly stabbed his 39-year-old mother, Majida Egab, at least 13 times with a kitchen knife in an unprovoked assault as she slept on May 30.

The defendant subsequently stabbed his 14-year-old brother, Deputy District Attorney Andy Aguilar alleged.

Officers responding to a family dispute about 1 a.m. in an apartment complex in the 500 block of Ballantyne Street found the mortally wounded woman on a staircase. Her teenage son was found in a nearby parking lot.

Judge Patricia Cookson found that enough evidence was presented at Agab’s preliminary hearing to proceed with the case. A Superior Court arraignment was set for Dec. 28.
