San Diego State University officials Friday were mourning the death of a 19-year-old student who fell earlier in the day from the roof of a five-story apartment building near the campus.

Melissa Kennon, 19, was with a friend when she plunged off the structure in the 5000 block of Lindo Paseo shortly before 4 a.m., said San Diego police and the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

Medics took Kennon to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where she was pronounced dead about six hours later.

The fall was believed to have been an accident, SDPED Officer Frank Cali said.

SDSU Vice President of Student Affairs Eric Rivera expressed his deepest condolences on the passing of Kennon, a sophomore studying psychology, saying:

“Our community is deeply saddened by the passing of Melissa Kennon. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and loved ones, who have shared with us how much Melissa loved SDSU. It is heartbreaking when a young life is lost. We will honor Melissa by sharing strength and support with one another as we process through this difficult time.”

Emergency counseling was being made available, with students being encouraged to contact SDSU Counseling and Psychological Services for support or assistance if needed.

Counseling and Psychological Services can be reached at 619-594-5220, or at their website at studentaffairs.sdsu.edu.
