San Diego police Wednesday sought the public’s help in identifying the driver who fatally struck a 27-year-old woman in Ocean Beach on Saturday and fled.
A motorist found the body of Amber Schei along the side of Nimitz Boulevard south of the on-ramp to Interstate 8 and called for help about 6 a.m. Saturday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Schei’s mother, Tammy Wilson, a military veteran, had just returned from Afghanistan where she was working as a counter narcotics contractor four days before Schei’s death, according to NBC San Diego.
Investigators determined she had been riding a skateboard when she was hit by a 2009 Ford Mustang that was headed north near the on-ramp to Interstate 8, police and Crime Stoppers said. The driver sped off and left the fatally injured woman behind.
Schei died at the scene from multiple blunt force injuries, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.
The crash was on a section of Nimitz Boulevard where vehicles at near- freeway speeds are not uncommon. A skateboard park is nearby at Robb Field.
Police said that evidence left at the scene indicated the Mustang’s windshield had been damaged in the crash along with the passengers side window area’s vertical support pillar.
Employees of glass repair businesses in San Diego County were asked to report any recent orders for a front windshield for a 2009 Ford Mustang.
