A construction worker died Tuesday in an accident at a job site near Lindbergh Field.

Someone made a 911 call about 8:45 a.m. to report that a crew member had been hit by falling rebar at a rental-car facility under construction near the intersection of Pacific Highway and West Washington Street, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Medics tried in vain to revive the injured man at the scene, spokesman Lee Swanson said.

About three hours after the incident, airport officials reported via Twitter that “We are deeply saddened to report the fatality of a worker in an accident at the Rental Car Center construction site at (San Diego International Airport) earlier today.”

The victim’s name was withheld pending family notification.
