San Diego County isn’t alone. Cal Fire reports that it was battling nearly three dozen wildfires statewide amid drought conditions and strong Santa Ana winds.
“Already this year, Cal Fire has responded to over 100 percent more wildfires than on average, and May’s fire activity only has continued that trend,” Cal Fire said Thursday.
The agency said it began its transition into fire season several months earlier than normal “and in Southern California fire season really never ended as Cal Fire kept its seasonal staffing and aircraft available all winter long.”
Much of Southern California remains under a Red Flag Warning for high fire danger due to the Santa Ana winds and low humidity, which is expected to last through Thursday.
