An investigation was under way Thursday into a Mother’s Day fight outside a Pacific Beach bar in which a man was critically injured, police said.
The victim, Steven Kyle Wood, and his roommate were walking home from Tavern at the Beach in the 1100 block of Garnet Avenue around 1:45 a.m. Sunday when they saw males yelling at each other on the sidewalk, according to San Diego police Detective Greg Goodman.
There were also females yelling at the males to stop, then two males threw burritos at two other males, Goodman said, adding that neither Wood nor his roommate were involved in the burrito-throwing.
Later, someone came up behind Wood and punched him for unknown reasons, police said. Goodman said Wood and the assailant squared off to fight and words were exchanged, then the assailant walked away with friends west on Garnet Avenue.
The assailant then crossed the street at Garnet Avenue and Dawes Street, and Woods followed, running up to him in the intersection, Goodman said.
A crowd gathered around them and when it dispersed, Wood’s roommate saw him lying in the street unconscious, according to Goodman, who said Wood was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and remained in critical condition Thursday.
Anyone with information about those involved in the fight was asked to call Goodman at (858) 552-1733.
