Millennials seeking affordable housing have made Mira Mesa the 9th “hottest” real estate market in America, according to a new analysis by Realtor.com.

The online service of the National Association of Realtors said a typical home in ZIP Code 92126 lists for under $540,000 and sells within 22 days.

Mira Mesa has become a booming area with a diverse populace and wide variety of independent stores, restaurants and microbreweries,” Realtor.com said in its report.

Proximity to beaches and parks like Mission Trails and Los Peñasquitos Canyon make the neighborhood “a prime location for Southern California-style recreation enthusiasts,” according to the report.

Last year North Park made the list of the national top 10, but homes there are now more expensive.

“Millennials are the largest generation in U.S. history and they are flexing their muscle when it comes to the housing market,” said Danielle Hale, chief economist for the Realtor.com. “Increasingly, the hottest housing markets are the ones that appeal to millennial preferences, and right now the standouts are relatively affordable suburbs with local ‘it’ factors such as hiking trails, great restaurants, and nightlife.”

The only other California neighborhood to make the list was Castro Valley in San Francisco’s East Bay.
