A San Diego nonprofit that supports business startups operated by women received a $30,000 grant today from the city of San Diego.
Hera Labs, located in Sorrento Valley, plans to use the money to host three-month business accelerator programs; offer need-based scholarships for those programs; conduct marketing, internet and intellectual property training; hold startup pitch contests; and operate an annual investment conference.
This year’s investment conference is scheduled for Sept. 17.
“San Diego is at its best when every resident has the opportunity to succeed,” Mayor Kevin Faulconer said at a check presentation event. “Hera Labs gives female entrepreneurs a chance to learn the skills they need to start or grow businesses that can benefit men and women alike.”
The award comes from a city economic development fund. According to the mayor’s office, Hera Labs has helped launch more than 70 startups, grow more than 100 small businesses and create more than 80 jobs in San Diego.
“Women contribute significantly to San Diego’s startup ecosystem and we’re honored that the city of San Diego is helping to sustain and grow opportunities for female-led startups,” said Silvia Mah, founder of Hera Labs.
