San Diego moved up one spot to fourth place in 2015 among the nation’s top cities for meetings and conventions in the annual ranking by Cvent.

The national meeting software and services company released its list of the top 50 cities shortly after midnight Eastern time on Tuesday.

Cvent evaluated more than 5,000 cities over the period July 2014 to June 2015. The rankings were based on the number of event proposals, total room nights, the variety of qualified venues and other criteria from Cvent’s database of 218,000 hotels, resorts and special event locations.

The top 10 cities for 2015 are:

  1. Orlando
  2. Las Vegas
  3. Chicago, IL
  4. San Diego
  5. Atlanta
  6. Washington
  7. New York
  8. Dallas
  9. Nashville
  10. Phoenix

Within San Diego County, Carlsbad fell out of the top-50 ranking and Coronado slipped to 44th.

“Competition for meetings and conventions business continues to be very heated between destinations that are eager to attract events to boost their local economies,” said Bharet Malhotra, senior vice president of sales for the Cvent Supplier Network. “This year we witnessed several cities jockeying for a position in the top 50 list, with significant movement within the ranks.

“One of the interesting trends this year has been the rise of smaller cities moving ahead of and even displacing destinations that are near large metro areas but not downtown,” he added.
