Walmart on Wednesday dedicated its new “Supercenter” in Poway following a revitalization and expansion of the original store, which was the first in San Diego County.
The center at 13425 Community Road includes a new grocery section and 85 new employees were hired. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Poway Mayor Don Higginson and other city and civic officials were scheduled to attend a ribbon-cutting Wednesday morning.
“The chamber is thrilled at what the addition of this Walmart Supercenter will do to help support our community and keep it growing and thriving,” said Dolores Canizales, President and CEO of the Poway Chamber of Commerce.
As part of the opening celebration, Walmart presented $27,500 in donations to local non-profit organizations.
The original Poway store opened in 1992 and was the first Walmart in San Diego County.
Walmart is the world’s largest retailer with nearly 11,000 stores in 27 countries and annual sales of nearly $500 billion.
