For the first time, Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego made the top 30 in the rankings in all 10 specialties in U.S. News & World Report’s ratings of medical centers for pediatric patients, which were released Tuesday.
The 377-bed medical center in Kearny Mesa made the rankings in all the specialties for the fourth year in a row, but moved up on some of the the lists to meet the new milestone.

“That’s why these rankings are so gratifying. They illustrate our enduring commitment to providing the best possible care to every child.”
Rady Children’s Hospital ranked third nationally in pediatric orthopedics, 12th in diabetes and endocrinology, 16th in cancer, 16th in gastroenterology and GI surgery, 18th in neurology and neurosurgery, 21st in nephrology, 21st in urology, 22nd in pulmonology, 25th in neonatology and 28th in cardiology and heart surgery.
The rankings are built on questionnaires sent to 183 children’s medical centers around the country, as well as surveys on hospital reputations sent to pediatric specialists and sub-specialists. The magazine said 116 hospitals turned in enough data to be evaluated, and 89 ranked in at least one specialty.
Whether and where a hospital was ranked depended on:
- clinical outcomes, such as cancer survival and rates of various infections;
- efficiency and coordination of care delivery, which included reputation survey results, compliance with best practices and steps to control infection, and
- care-related resources such as adequate nursing staff and availability of programs tailored to particular illnesses and conditions.
