“Shades of Blue,” celebrating the iconic jazz label Blue Note Records, will feature renowned musicians Gilbert Castellanos and Joshua White in Chula Vista Thursday.
Ticket prices range from $25 to $40 for the 7:30 p.m. event at the Southwestern College Performing Arts Center, 900 Otay Lakes Road.
Castellanos, joined by his quartet, featuring pianist White, Tyler Kreutel on drums and Luca Alemanno on bass, will perform compositions by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver Quintet, Wayne Shorter and Lee Morgan.
The Young Lions Jazz Conservatory All Stars will open the evening.
The co-production of “Shades of Blue” is offered by Southwestern in partnership with San Diego Symphony Orchestra Association.

With nearly 100 recording and film credits, Castellanos, born in Guadalajara and raised in San Diego, has earned international recognition as a composer, curator, educator, arranger and trumpeter. He was once named one of the most innovative jazz trumpeters, in DownBeat Magazine’s “25 for The Future,” and this year won a San Diego Music Award.
White has been praised by legendary musicians such as Herbie Hancock and lauded for his “daring and courageous approach to improvisation.” Shortly after placing in the top two at the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition, he began performing as a soloist and musical collaborator, while actively touring throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia.
