The famous Carlsbad Flower Fields officially opens this week.

The impressive display of more than 50 acres of flowers is open through May 14 and overlooks the Pacific Ocean.

The fields, which are filled with Giant Tecolote Ranunculus, has been an attraction for more than 60 years. Organizers said the fields began 85 years ago when a man named Luther Gage began growing the flower.

Today, the blooms are on display for eight weeks during the Spring. The Carlsbad Flower Fields also host events throughout the opening.

The Flower Fields is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. Prices are $14 for adults, $13 for seniors and $7 for children from 3 to 10.

Free Science Festival at Petco Park

San Diego’s annual science EXPO DAY will draw tens of thousands of families interested in science, technology, engineering and math to Petco Park. The free event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. includes interactive, hands-on exhibits, as well as other activities for budding K-12 science lovers. EXPO DAY kicks off one of the largest STEM festivals in the United States, with more than 70,000 expected to attend events scheduled throughout San Diego County from March 4 to 12.

St. Patrick’s Day Run

Start your St. Patrick’s Day celebration early with a 5K run this weekend. The city of El Cajon is hosting its fifth annual St. Patrick’s Day Half Marathon, 5K Run/Walk, Green Mile, and Tribes & Clans competition on Sunday. Attendees can also expect live music, a health & fitness expo, craft beer at the post-race festivities, and a best costume competition. Registration for the race is $19 for the mile fun run, $45 for the 5K and $89 for the half marathon. Funds raised at the race will benefit several East County charities.

Super Run

The Super Run is happening at the Embarcadero Marina North this Saturday. Participants are asked to sport their best superhero attire as they run a 5K. The race ends with fun activities for all age groups. Pre-registration is $40 per person and $45 the day of.

Travel Show

Looking to plan your next big getaway? Head down to the San Diego Convention Center this weekend for the Travel and Adventure Show. Attendees will learn about the hottest destinations around the world, hear from travel experts and meet celebrities. The event takes place both from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $11 for one day and $18 for two days. Children under 16 are free.

Gem Faire

The Del Mar Fairgrounds is hosting a glitzy event this weekend. The annual Gem Faire, which showcases the finest jewelry and gems from around the world, takes place Friday through Sunday. Attendees can expect to see gemstones, crystals, beads and more. The event is $7 and free for children under 11.

Shakespeare & Tea

Indulge in a bit of Shakespeare with an event at the San Diego Central Library. The Shakespeare Society will host a reading from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Complimentary refreshments will also be provided.
