Dutch artists Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Jan Bruegel the Elder often included animals in their famous compositions, which ranged from political allegories to moralizing satires to biblical subjects.
Those animals will be the subject of a free lecture at the Timken Museum at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 14, by Victoria Sancho Lobis of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Her talk on “The Animal Universe within the Bruegel Dynasty” will consider a selection of prints, drawings, and paintings in which the father and son represented animal figures for different interpretative ends in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The lecture is inspired by the San Diego Zoo’s 100th Anniversary, and the Timken has joined six other Balboa Park institutions in animal-themed exhibitions for 2016.
