More than 1,600 Southwest High School students appeared to set a record Friday morning for the world’s largest reading lesson.
About 1,650 students sought to top the current record of more than 1,400 students, set in Colchester, England, in July, by reading a passage from “The ‘In’ Group,” according to Southwest Assistant Principal Becky Bravo.
The exact number at Southwest was still being tallied for Guinness World Records, according to the Sweetwater Union High School District, via Twitter.

In addition to reading, the students from the Nestor school discussed and analyzed the passage and provided feedback.
Bravo said schoolwide literacy events are held regularly at the school.

“It’s exciting because it’s something that we practice, something that we do,” Bravo said.
The event was organized by The Symbol of Success, a Los Angeles-based company that seeks to improve the U.S. educational system.
