An El Cajon Police officer shot and killed a knife-wielding man who was walking in traffic on Sunday night.

The shooting occurred at 9 p.m. on Second Street near Oakdale Avenue, according to news accounts.

Officers responding to a 911 call reportedly found the seemingly incoherent man standing in traffic and when they tried to talk to him, he pulled out a knife and started walking south toward Madison Avenue.

Officers twice used a TASER on the man and reportedly struggled to get the knife out of his hands before he lunged at an officer and was shot.

He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to news accounts.

El Cajon police officials were not available for further comment.
