POINT LOMA – Members of the 2025 Point Loma High School football team elected captains while enjoying a motivational weekend of camaraderie and team-building last weekend at a Julian-area facility.
Head coach Ryan Price noted players voted for their captains using a Google program on their phones, ensuring a secret vote.
Selected to represent their team and make the walk to midfield to meet the referees, opposing captains, and call the pregame coin toss are:
- Jack Lepore, an offensive and defensive lineman (in his third year of varsity experience);
- Max Merrick, the team’s center (third year);
- Romeo Carter, wide receiver and safety (third year);
- Ryan Patterson, tight end (second year); and
- Leo Sahd, tight end and linebacker (fourth year).
After the captains were elected, each spoke to the team about their goals and excitement about going to battle together during the upcoming season.
This selection of team captains came at the end of the retreat. Players were kept very active as time flew by quickly during the two-day, one-night gathering.
Activities included a low-ropes course in which every member had to succeed, which meant players worked with teammates they normally did not hang out with and helped those experiencing difficulties.
In addition, the event offered archery and a sunset hike wrapped around team meals, with the food receiving a thumbs-up from players.
“The retreat was amazing,” Price said. “We did a lot of team bonding, it brought the whole team together, and they (the camp staff) loved us.”
One group activity involved sitting around a campfire as individuals, including coaches, shared details of their lives – including adversities they’ve overcome – as everyone learned more about each other.
“I’ve had parents reach out to me and tell me their kid raved about the experience,” Price said.
Due to the distance and location of the retreat, parents carpooled players to and from the event.
Players are now in full pads and helmets as practices ramp up for the season opener on Aug. 22 at Del Norte High.
Two events are open to fans and the community before that date, including an intrasquad Maroon and Gold game on Aug. 8 and a full scrimmage next Friday involving at least three schools that will compete against each other on both offense and defense.
Price welcomes everyone to both events taking place on Bennie Edens Field, starting at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
