As the holiday season approaches, local police will increase patrol officers looking to pull over drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

From Wednesday to Jan. 1, San Diego police officers will be participating in a national campaign called “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” in an effort to stop impaired drivers who are a risk to the public.

Research states that the holiday season is the most dangerous time to be on the road. In December of 2022, 1,062 people in the U.S. were killed due to drivers under the influence, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

SDPD encourages the community to either stay in during the holidays or have a plan to get home safely such as scheduling a ride or designating a sober driver.

“During the holiday season, we see families and loved ones coming together to celebrate, and our goal is to make sure everyone gets home safely, Sgt. Gregory Minter, Sergeant, said in a press release.

“Impaired driving isn’t just dangerous; it’s illegal. We urge people to act responsibly and plan a sober ride home.”

The Chula Vista Police Department also will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence. The enforcement effort also is part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, and continues through New Year’s Day.

Alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medication and cannabis products all can lead to impaired driving.

Police also said to call 911 if you suspect a driver to be under the influence.

Funding for the national campaign was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic and Safety through the NHTSA.
