A man died in a shooting following an attempted traffic stop in National City Friday, and a San Diego County sheriff’s deputy suffered a hand injury in the confrontation.
The shooting occurred around 2 p.m. on Mile of Cars Way, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office. The department confirmed that one of its deputies was transported to UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest.
The incident began when uniformed and undercover law enforcement personnel approached an Acura with at least three people inside, according to OnScene.TV.
An occupant, believed to be armed, fled the Acura and shots were fired by an undercover deputy. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene
San Diego Police Department homicide detectives also responded and will investigate the incident under the terms of a 2022 agreement governing officer- or deputy-involved shootings.
SDPD Lt. Lou Maggi, NBC.com reported, said that a witness had spotted the suspect fleeing and sent authorities to a Dodge car dealership. They found the suspect hiding in a tow truck, which is where he ended up being wounded.
Maggi told NBC that a gun was found nearby and that it is not clear if the suspect directed fire at anyone.
The deputy was injured by shrapnel to his hand when a bullet shattered glass on a vehicle, according to OnScene. In video supplied by OnScene, a man being treated by paramedics was ambulatory, with blood on two or three fingers of his right hand.
Two others in the Acura were taken into custody. Maggi later said, NBC reported, that both were arrested on drug-related charges.
In addition, police said, the undercover deputy and an officer from National City each were equipped with body-worn cameras Friday.
