Chula Vista is gearing up for its 27th Annual Lemon Festival in downtown on Third Avenue from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

How about a lemon-filled atmosphere? The avenue will be transformed, including two stages of live music, a lemon cook-off competition, arts and craft vendors and the Little Lemons kids’ area in Memorial Park.

The first Lemon Festival was held in 1997, also on Third. Although California is not the lemon capital of the world, it is not far from Mexico, which is considered the top lemon producer in the world.

California is still a strong supplier, with lemons grown in Fresno, Tulare, Kern, Ventura and Riverside counties.

In the early 1900s, Chula Vista was filled with lemon groves, when developers realized that the surrounding area was perfect for the citrus fruit. The annual Lemon Festival aims to bring local businesses and residents together to help celebrate this history.
