Two children died after hopping out of a car that pulled over early Sunday evening on state Route 78 in Vista.
The fatalities occurred on the eastbound freeway east of Mar Vista Drive around 6:10 p.m., when the two children exited a car after their mother pulled off to the side of the roadway, according to the Vista Fire Department.
It was unclear why he mother pulled onto the shoulder. She was taken into custody by authorities as the scene.
The ages and genders of the minors were not immediately released.
The crash was being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.
