A computer problem affecting United Airlines grounded its fleet throughout the nation for a time Wednesday, delaying a handful of flights into and out of San Diego, with delays expected to continue the rest of the day.

The airline halted all U.S. departures beginning just before 5:30 a.m. Pacific Time, for about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Most impacted at Lindbergh Field were early morning takeoffs for East Coast destinations like Newark and Washington, D.C., and route hub cities like Chicago, Denver and Houston. The departures were delayed for one hour or more, according to the website FlightAware.com.

Lines were longer than usual at the United baggage and ticketing counter in Terminal 2.

Because of the cascading effect on schedules, passengers flying on United later today or tonight were encouraged to double-check their flight time with the airline before going to the airport.
